This gratin can be a side or a main course.

1 1/2 lbs turnips, (peeled) cut into thin rounds
salt and pepper, to taste
1 c coarsely grated cheddar cheese, or other cheese
1 1/2 c whole milk
1/2 t fresh thyme leaves, or 1/4 t dried thyme

1. Preheat the oven to 400ºF.  Arrange an oven rack in the center of the oven.

2. Butter a 8- x 8-inch gratin or other similar sized baking dish. Layer in it half the turnips. Season well with salt and black pepper. Sprinkle with half the cheese. Repeat with the remaining turnips and the remaining cheese, seasoning again with salt and pepper. Add milk just to cover. Sprinkle with the thyme.

3. Place the dish in the center of the oven and bake until the turnips are tender and have absorbed most of the milk, 1 to 1-1/4 hours. Serve immediately.
