I imagine you could use other roots here, or a mixture of roots.
8 – 10 c (peeled) chopped turnips
1/2 c maple syrup
3 T grainy mustard
2 T vegetable oil
1 T toasted (dark) sesame oil
salt and pepper, to taste
1 t dried thyme or 1 T fresh thyme leave
1. Preheat oven to 350ºF. Lightly oil a baking dish large enough to hold all the turnips.
2. In a small saucepan, combine the maple syrup, mustard, oils, salt, and pepper. Bring just to a simmer. Take off heat.
3. Place turnips in the oiled baking dish. Pour the warm maple mixture all over. Sprinkle with thyme. Bake for 1 to 1-1/2 hours, basting every 20 minutes or so, until the turnips are golden brown and very tender.
